So these days I am finding myself sitting in the car rider line and in various doctor's offices and therapy clinics twiddling my thumbs. I made up a couple kits filled with hexagons to keep nearby and they're multiplying! I'm really enjoying making these & wondering why I ever stopped. The ones below will be appliqued onto purses or bags or something. I've started a new secret project of hexagons that I'll finish sometime this fall. After that, I am pretty sure I'm going to start on a quilt of 1 inch hexies with no repeats. Won't that be a fun project!?! Will do them at random first in rows (like the last picture below) and then stitch them together. All by hand. And I'm not in a hurry to finish it. Might take me years, but that's ok. 1 inch ones are a good size for a quilt, I think. To me, the 2 inch ones are a little big. Yes, they'd go faster, but I like the look of the small hexagons because they're dainty. I'm always drawn to geometric designs. These it so nicely into that category. Making hexagons used to take me a LOT longer but now I'm getting quicker and more efficient. I use applique pins (they're tiny and sharp) to hold the paper in place until I get a couple corners basted. I like this method more than glue sticks or other techniques. Are you guys making hexies these days? If not, think about joining me! Let's get inspired!

I don't feel so guilty watching TV when I have these to work on. Sadly, they've been set aside until after the holidays when I'll have more time. I'm not sure how large I'll end up making this quilt but I'm having fun putting it together.Sharonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18111618956115991373noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4911131761468604078.post-653356719966771542010-11-16T13:55:00.000-08:002010-11-16T13:55:53.022-08:00Scrappy Hoop Swap

I didn't applique them on... didn't even sew them together. I just took the paper out, snipped the basting stitches, ironed each of them well, shot them with some spray adhesive and went to town.

I'm not too disappointed with it. I think next time, I'll use my walking foot or maybe a zipper foot to outline them (stitch just inside the hexagon to sew them down individually) one at a time.

Mostly this little experiment was to play around with my new foot.

I got the #55 leather roller foot from Jamie at Bernina. Love it.

I realized tonight after doing a bit of online research that I should've moved the needle over so that it sews RIGHT next to the wheel. Will try again tonight that way.

Might even play around with some hexies, too!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616509063994869028noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4911131761468604078.post-34661695689506123102010-10-03T10:01:00.000-07:002010-10-03T10:06:37.044-07:00Its DONE!!!I finished my hexie quilt top!! I'm thinking we all should make some 1 inch hexagons in modern fabrics and have a swap in the next few months. Grab your favorite fabric, cut it into 2.5 inch squares and start making hexagons, my friends! More info to come...

This was my first attempt at hexagons. Not so happy with it. I suppose from a distance, it's not bad, but I was using a technique that I didn't love. I think it didn't involve paper and seemed less crisp than the method I prefer now (paper, basting, etc.). I was also pretty unhappy with my stitches.

These are mostly just for practice, but I may make a pillow or something out of them. Who knows...Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05616509063994869028noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4911131761468604078.post-60456128269789245542010-08-12T22:28:00.000-07:002010-08-12T22:28:33.297-07:00A Place To ShareHello, fellow hexagon addicts! Since we haven't been able to talk and share in any sort of organized fashion during our meetings, I thought an online blog would be a great way to communicate and get ideas...

What do you think?

Here's a little picture of what I have been up to in the hexagon realm... I finished this block but don't have a picture handy of it completed. It's for Andrea for the KC Scrappy Bee. I was able to practice my technique and by the time I finished it, I felt like I had a pretty good handle on my process. I think I'll be doing hexagons for the rest of my life. I love this.
